The Do’s and Don’ts of Driving an Electric Vehicle

DO make sure you take advantage of any applicable EV tax credits.

The most advantageous tax credits are for new electric vehicles. New EV buyers can receive a one-time tax break of $2,500 to $7,500, depending on the gross battery capacity, at the time of filing. There are certain limitations when it comes to these tax credits, for example if your taxes do not exceed the amount your electric.

There are also extra incentives available for businesses with commercial motor vehicles that invest in charging stations.

DO have a charging plan for your EV.

It's critical to have a plan in place for charging your EV, as public charging stations are increasingly available in cities. Anyone who purchases an EV for personal use should also invest in a 240-volt home charger, which is both energy-efficient and cost-effective. If you have this sort of charger at home, you'll add anywhere from 10.

If you want faster charging or a backup plan for extended trips, public fast-chargers can be beneficial - but only a few vehicles can use this style of charging, and frequent rapid charging is hard on batteries. Regardless of the circumstance, electric vehicle drivers must be aware of their vehicles' charging limitations.

DO make sure you charge your EV for the range you need.

If you're going on a longer journey or a road trip where long-range is required, it's fine to charge your EV's battery to full. On most days, you won't need 100% of the battery range in your electric vehicle. It's ideal to keep between 20 and 80 percent charging capacity at all other times.

DO take care of your EV’s battery.

It will degrade more quickly if you leave it at zero charge and repeatedly charge the battery to full. Most EVs have settings that allow drivers to pick when they want the battery to start charging and how completely they want it charged. Make sure your EV is protected against excessive heat or cold, too, because both of these can harm the battery.
