The Society of Automotive Engineers chose the J1772 combination plug as the common connector for the United States. It can be used for AC or DC charging and measures 43mm in diameter. The electric vehicle connectors are designed for single-phase electrical systems of 120 V or 240V. They use a 1kHz square wave at +/-12 volts on their pilot pin to detect and communicate the vehicle's maximum allowable current and control the charging process. This connector will be used outdoors, so it is essential that they can withstand extreme weather conditions like heat, rain, wind and other environmental factors. These connectors are equipped with safety features such as shock protection, pins on the inside that prevent humans from getting to them, and pins that do not have any voltage when they are not in use.
